Sandhani International Eye Bank is one of the Associated Organizations of SNEDS. The Eye Bank Along with SNEDS was launched to ensure the involvement of the people of every walk of life with the posthumous eye donation movement of Snadhani. SIEB is the only one modern eye bank of the country. The Eye banks operates its activities though it's branches all over the country. At present it has eight branches all over the country. It's head office is situated in Dhaka. The Eye Bank provides good quality corneas for grafting. The dedicated staffs of the Eye Bank work for motivating people of walks for Posthumous eye donation. The Eye Bank also has a modern lab.

The Birth Of Sandhani International Eye Bank

In the year 1984, the Rangpur Unit of Sandhani Encountered an approach for cornea for an 18 years adolescent girl named Tuntuni. The girl was blind from her early childhood. The Higher authority of Sandhani contacted Dr. Hudson Silva of Srilanka for a pair of corneas for Tuntuni. Sandhani also invited Dr. Silva to come to Bangladesh to deliver speech in Eye Donation Campaign. Dr. Hudson Silva visited Bangladesh during 23 to 25 of November, 1984. At that time on November 25, 1984, Sandhani International eye Bank was launched. It can be mentioned that SNEDS was established on the same day. The poor girl Tuntuni regained her vision from the eyes that Dr. Hudson Silva brought with him from Srilanka. The incident moved the whole nation and the existing media of that time highlighted the incident. From there Eye bank under the able leadership of SNEDS works for restoring the sights of blind people.

The New Realization

From the very beginning the members of SNEDS were trying to find effective means for substantial increment in the rate of cornea collection. They decided to review the achievements of Eye Banks along with SNEDS in the year 2002. For the assistance, they approached ORBIS International. In response, ORBIS supported SNEDS to held a three -day Strategic Planning workshop in May 2002. From the workshop they got grim picture of blindness condition in Bangladesh. In the workshop it is found that the total number of corneal blind in Bangladesh is 526,000. Of the total Corneal blind, 160,000 people are blind in both corneas while 366,000 people are blind in single cornea. It was found in the workshop that the cornea collection rate of SIEB or SNEDS is 100 to 150 per year which means that it is needed 3,500 years to get 526,000 corneas. It was also found that 31,000 corneas will be needed to eliminate blindness from the country within the year 2020. About the death rate it was realized that the crude death rate in Bangladesh is 7.8% and  1.1 million people died every year. It is possible to collect 33,000 corneas per year if only the 1.5% of the total dead will be used as corneal source. Bearing the existing condition in mind SNEDS along with ORBIS International took a project naming "Strengthening Eye Banking Capacity of SNEDS." It is a four-year project. Under the Project the Eye Bank of Sandhani was rearranged and the it was also equipped with modern machineries and techniques. The well trained personnel had already been appointed for bringing pace in the activity of the eye bank.

Strengthening Eye Banking Capacity of SNEDS

As it was revealed from the statistics that the requirements for corneas can be fulfilled with the corneas of only 1.5% of the dead people every year, we gave importance to convince the people for posthumous eye donation. In this process the relatives of the deceased are requested to donate the eyes of their beloved. The process is known as Grief Counseling. We have grief counselors who attend the patient for all the time. Their duty is to dedicate themselves for the service of the patient and show sympathy to the patient's relatives. The counselors in the suitable time make approach to the relatives of the patients for collecting the corneas of the deceased. In this process we follow the existing law of Bangladesh. It is found that the Grief Counseling method became successful in the U.S.A, India, Nepal, Myanmar and even in the in the survey of SNEDS at Chittagong Medical college. Besides the Grief counseling method we use Hospital based retrieval programs to motivate the staffs, doctors and nurses of the hospital for collecting more corneas.
